Wednesday, May 12 2010 - The European standards organizations have endorsed the initiative to establish a European standard in service concerning cosmetic surgery. In September, the first European meeting will take place and in June a committee has been established.
The market for aesthetic surgery is a growing commercial market. The quality and safety is different in each clinic and country. Both patient safety and the reputation of qualified and skilled surgeons suffer from the number occurring complications in surgery performed in unsafe conditions by incompetent people.
Objective
The objective is to achieve European standard agreements about the quality, safety and reliability of services offered by private clinics. Public health is not included. The proposal is to agree on training levels of staff, facilities and equipment, a quality management system, ethics in relation to patients, and marketing. The European standard will not be able to harmonize existing national legislation, but complement them where needed and where standards are missing.
