On the development of lipodema is still much uncertainty. It is known that the disease occurs almost only at women. The disease is not caused by overeating. Moreover, it is clear that genetic factors play an important role.
Lipodema often begins or worsens with a hormone change, such as puberty or after a pregnancy. Besides the abnormal fat distribution, there are cases in which patients reduced drainage of tissue fluid (lymph) in combination with weakening of connective tissue. Over time this may create a combination of lipodema and lymphedema also called lympho-lipodema.
Factors that affect his lipodema are overweight / obesity, excessive caloric intake, hormonal factors, long sitting or standing, insufficient muscular work, heat, presence of lymphedema / venous edema.
